Traverse City Triathlon Update

For those who have chosen to fully refund your registration, expect to receive your refunds in mid-August. We appreciate your patience.

Update: Cancellation of the Traverse City Triathlon 

 

Dear Participants, Sponsors, and Supporters, 

We hope this email finds you well. It is with deep regret and sincere apologies that we inform you of the cancellation of the highly anticipated Traverse City Triathlon, scheduled to take place on August 20th, 2023.  

As you already know, in mid-June, Traverse City denied our permits, which were originally submitted in January. We have been working with the Peninsula Township and Michigan DNR to host the race in various places. Unfortunately, the DNR denied the opportunity to use the Bower’s Harbor boat launch, the only feasible location to get swimmers in and out of the water.  

Regrettably, there is not enough time to completely re-work the event and continue to host it in August of 2023. We hope to find a new home for the race in 2024 that will allow us to race within the surrounding Traverse City area.  

We understand the disappointment and inconvenience this announcement brings, especially considering the tremendous enthusiasm and preparation many of you have invested in this triathlon. We share your frustration and assure you that this decision is extremely disappointing to our team as well. The Traverse City Triathlon has always aimed to provide a memorable and well-organized experience for participants, and we have exhausted all available avenues to host this event within the Traverse City area. 

Our team has been in constant communication with the relevant authorities and made extensive efforts to meet their expectations and requirements. From changing locations to creating all-new routes, and securing parking options, to anything that was asked of us, our permit applications were still denied by the City of Traverse City and the Department of Natural Resources.  

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to obtain the necessary approvals to hold the event. We deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause and understand the impact it has on your training, travel plans, and overall experience. 

We would like to assure you that we are taking this situation seriously and are committed to making it right. We worked to provide suitable alternatives and solutions for those affected by the cancellation. Your options are: 

  • 100% Refund 

  • Receive Two (2) Free Entries to any of Race Day Events’ events 

  • Donate to “Keep Tri’ing in Traverse City: Race Day Events has invested time and effort in keeping triathlon in the Traverse City Area. With your donation, we promise to “Keep Tri-ing" to bring a triathlon to the local community” 

All athletes registered for the Traverse City Triathlon will have 3 weeks to make their decision. If an athlete has not notified us after the 3-week deadline, the registration will be donated to Keep Tri’ing in Traverse City. The deadline to inform us of your decision is: July 31st, 2023.
